The popular Middle Park beach in Melbourne is under the international spotlight following a world-first study by Monash University chemists who have discovered how sand ‘holds its breath’.
The discovery, which has been published in Nature Geoscience, has astonishing implications and potential uses in the biofuels industry, according to lead authors Associate Professor Perran Cook and PhD student Michael Bourke, from the Water Studies Centre, School of Chemistry, Monash University.
In this work, scientists present the first study of the importance of anoxic micro-algal metabolism through fermentation in permeable sediments. Further reading, visit: https://www.monash.edu/news/articles/world-first-scientific-discovery-uncovered-at-a-melbourne-beach
Did you know? Taking a science degree at Monash is “more than just an education” but “to build a strong understanding of scientific concepts whilst fostering capacity for enterprise, science, diplomacy and leadership”, said by Dr Brookes, winner of 2016 Telstra Victorian Business Women’s Public Sector and Academia Award and Course Director for Monash’s unique Honours degree - the Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges. Dr Brookes also said re-thinking STEM education was one of the biggest challenges facing Australia and globally.
Did you know? Australian researchers have created the world's first 3D-printed jet engine in a manufacturing breakthrough that engineers expect will lead to cheaper, lighter and more fuel-efficient jets. The partnership between Monash University and spin-out company Amaero Engineering has captured the attention of Airbus, Boeing and defence contractor Raytheon.
It all began two years ago with a challenge from French aerospace company Safran. The company gave the Monash researchers one of their old engines and asked them to make a copy. The engineers passed with flying colours and are now making top-secret prototype parts for Safran, Boeing and Airbus. Professor Smith said the capabilities of the technology were only "scratching the tip of the iceberg".
